Not another Retrospective. "Nothing changes; why do we bother?" "Great! Finally, a meeting I don't have to pay attention to, and can get something done."
Perhaps you've had or even have these same thoughts when the meeting reminder pops up announcing a Retrospective. Like any other Team Meeting, the goal should be clear, and when the goal of a Retrospective is not clear, many contributors start to feel like, "why bother?"
The goal of a Retrospective is not merely to identify "The good, the bad, and the ugly" and move on to the next topic. Frequently this type of agenda leads to gripes, complaints, perhaps a few shout-outs to well-deserving Team members, and nothing changes. As fundamental as Sprint Planning or The Daily Scrum, the importance of holding Retrospectives is frequently underrated.
Agile Project Teams frequently consult with the Product Owner and the Business Owner to ensure they move in the right direction. In that same way, shouldn't we consult each other as a team to ensure we are all moving in harmony? We begin to see the Retrospective as an opportunity to demo for each other what is working well and what needs improvement.
Join Leigh Ann Gunther and David Betancourt for a frank conversation on Retrospectives. Why do we avoid them, and how can we get the most out of them?
