Harris is a US Navy veteran who served on active duty from 1971 to 1977 as an electronic technician maintaining flight and weapon system simulators. He completed boot camp at Navy Station Great Lakes and was stationed in Maryland and Florida.

Harris is a Vietnam-era veteran and retired from service as a Petty Officer 2nd Class. Following active duty, Harris built a 40+ year career in information technology. He earned his PMP certification in 2006 and presently serves as an adjunct professor at the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
