Ever trusted your navigation system to lead you through an unfamiliar city? It’s a classic case study in decision-making. This presentation draws the parallels between navigation apps and the project decisions we must make as we head into project “traffic.” The program looks at the importance of defining preferences, applying familiar knowledge and recognizing the drawbacks of heading onto unfamiliar turf. It also examines the critical nature of incorporating tolerances and alternatives when we make a wrong turn. While not purely numerically focused, the discussion also raises the specter of how to incorporate numbers in a less-than-perfect qualitative environment.
Some key takeaways:
1) Identify opportunities to align risk with corporate mission and values
2) Communicate tolerances and triggers to enable shared decision support
3) Establish the early stages of a risk brand
