Demystifying Agile:  Writing Good User Stories

In continuing our journey to “Demystify Agile,” join us for a session designed to explore the art of “Writing Good User Stories.” We will focus our time on the practical application of crafting User Stories. During this session, we will walk participants through receiving a requirement and breaking it down to the User Story level. 

Please join PMI-DVC Director of Agile, Leigh Ann Gunther, accompanied by Agilist, Architect, and User Story writer extraordinaire David Betancourt, as we explore how Requirements transform into user stories with tangible value and deliverables. What makes a good User Story? How do we know?  

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn how to take a Requirement from the end-user or consumer and transform it into User Stories.  We will share examples and field questions from members.
  • Learn how to INVEST in user story writing.  The INVEST model assesses the value of a user story.  User Stories should be Independent, Negotiable, Valuable, Estimate-able, Sized Appropriately, and Testable.  We will discuss how this model contributes to building user stories from Requirements.
  • Learn how to create Acceptance Criteria and not solutions.  Iterative refinement and demos to the end-user or consumer lead us to the solutions.

The Event Calendar indicates upcoming all Chapter events for the current calendar year and beyond.

Chapter Events

It is anticipated that each PMI-DVC monthly event meeting planning process commences at least several months in advance.  For 2021 all events will be virtual unless Government Regulations permit us to hold in-person meetings.  The Virtual platform we plan to use in 2021 will be Zoom.  We intend to use features of Zoom such as Breakout Rooms and Polling during planned events. Event attendance typically ranges from to 200 to 250 attendees.  The program committee does review the various Project Management and related subjects and ensures we are not repeating a subject on a frequent basis.  The Program Committee also awards Professional development Units or PDU’s at the conclusion of each event.  The transmission of PDU’s to PMI usually occurs within 2 weeks after the meeting has concluded. We always welcome our Chapter Members comments and suggestions via a feedback survey, which is distributed at the conclusion of each event.  If a member cannot send their comments on the survey, they can send their comments directly to Frank McKeown VP Professional Development at fmckeown@pmi-dvc.org or via cell at 917-295-9419.
