Breaking Free: Leading The Way

“People withhold up to 40% of their cooperation, commitment and productivity if they do not feel valued. By not treating people like human beings you get less.” With this pdd1_fullsizeobservation, Traci Duez introduced the participants at Delaware Valley Chapter’s Professional Development Day to a fascinating new field of study with practical applications for project managers.

In her highly interactive and dynamic workshop,Duez described how neuro-axiology - which blends neuroscience, the study of the brain, with axiology, the science of human value and value judgments -allows us to recognize the thinking that both supports and sabotages our success.

According to its foremost researcher Robert S. Hartman, our thinking is at the root of the problem. Routine decision-making such as driving to or from work, for example, may be placed on auto-pilot. Then, through continued experiences, pathways are set up in the brain for conditioned automatic responses.

The problem is when these thought patterns form habits that sabotage our success – despite our best intentions. So for example we attend skill-based workshops to create engaged teams then we turn around and unconsciously relapse into behaviors that devalue those we work with. Why? According to neuro-axiology it is because many of our conditioned responses formed in the past  no longer create the greatest net value. As an example, the habit of not talking to strangers supports you when you’re 4 years old but can be sabotaging to you when you are 34 years old.

Also, we can get stuck in lower levels of thinking. Axiology groups values and thoughts into 3 hierarchical classes. At the starting level are systemic value - procedures, policies, expectations, anything that is part of a system.  The next highest value dimension is extrinsic where judgments are based on external qualities and tangible deliverables. The highest dimension of value is intrinsic such as the value of a person which is priceless or the value a project delivers to an end-user, such as peace of mind. The challenge is that most of us have spent our lives focusing in the lowest two dimensions. We have been taught to overvalue our goals and ideas and place them ahead of people.

As an exercise, Ms. Duez asked participants to place the following in order from highest to lowest:
a) Being Productive
b) Being Right
c) Accepting Others

If you guessed C, A, B, she asserted, you are on target – people are more valuable than producing a thing and producing a thing is more valuable than being right. When we transpose the order as project managers - valuing being right over accepting others, for example - according to Ms. Duez, value is taken away and we self-sabotage our efforts.

Using a self assessment tool completed by the participants,Traci took the group through a series of exercises and personal stories designed to show how during times of high stress and emotional tension (which let’s admit it – happens quite a lot in project management) shifts can be made in one’s thinking to harness your best thinking. Practice is at the heart of this approach as this will change the hardwiring in the brain to form new habits that strengthen positive behavior.

Traci Duez presents a model of leadership that is authentic and inspiring for those in our profession who are challenged to create a positive environment for employees often under stressful conditions. So how do you get 40% more from your team? By improving your ability to make good value judgments – those which recognize people as valuable and also through understanding what truly motivates the knowledge worker.  For more information on Traci Duez, her recent book, and to obtain a customized Hartman Value Profile (HVP), readers are encouraged to visit her website.

The PMI Delaware Valley Board of Directors would like to share their appreciation for all the volunteers that made this event possible.  We would also like to recognize the event sponsors: Judge Group for making this event a success.   Finally, we would like to thank the Chapter members that attended this sold-out event.
